Hurricane Trudy strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast on 15 October, prompting the Mexican government to issue a tropical-storm watch for part of the coastline.

According to the latest National Hurricane Center advisory, Trudy was located approximately 285 miles (460km) south-southwest of Acapulco and 445 miles (715km) south-southeast of Manzanillo. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 90mph and was moving north-northwest at around 6mph. The watch covers the coast from Punta San Telmo southward to Zihuatanejo.

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting further rapid intensification, with Trudy expected to become a major hurricane as it approaches southwestern and west-central Mexico this weekend. However, the forecast track remains uncertain because the storm is moving relatively slowly and could shift direction. No landfall had occurred at the time of the latest advisory.

The main tourism risks are heavy rain, flooding, mudslides, dangerous surf and rip currents. The hurricane centre forecasts 4–8 inches of rain, with isolated totals of around 12 inches, across Colima and Jalisco through the weekend. Parts of the coast between Guerrero and Michoacán could receive 2–4 inches, with higher local totals. Large swells are expected to reach the southwestern coast from Friday.

The warning covers areas with beaches, resorts, marine excursions and road links serving Pacific visitors. Hotels, tour operators and activity providers in Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco should review emergency procedures and prepare for possible cancellations of beach and sea activities.

At publication time, the advisory described a tropical-storm watch rather than a hurricane warning, and no general closure of Mexico’s Pacific tourism corridor had been announced in the sources checked. Travellers should monitor local civil-protection instructions and confirm arrangements directly with airlines and accommodation providers.
