Travellers planning journeys through Italy at the end of October could face disruption after the USB union confirmed a nationwide general strike for Friday 30 October.
The Commission for Strike Guarantees lists the action as covering the whole day. Railway staff are scheduled to strike from 9pm on 29 October until 8.59pm on 30 October, while motorway workers are due to begin industrial action at 10pm on 29 October.
USB has described the action as a general strike involving public and private-sector workers, with transport among the sectors affected. The union has also called for wider demonstrations linked to wages, living costs, public services and opposition to increased military spending.
A separate 24-hour strike has been listed for staff working for Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta at Florence and Pisa airports. However, the effect on flights remains uncertain. The proposed airport action falls within the aviation sector’s protected period from 30 October to 5 November, and current Italian transport reporting says the measure may be challenged or revised. Travellers should therefore not assume that every flight will be cancelled—or that all flights will operate normally.
The rail disruption is the clearest immediate concern for visitors travelling between major cities. Services may be reduced outside guaranteed periods, while local public-transport arrangements will vary by city.
Passengers with bookings for 29 or 30 October should check directly with their airline, Trenitalia or regional rail operator before travelling. Trenitalia advises passengers to use its live-information channels and notes that minimum services apply during strikes.
