Thailand is developing a programme that could allow eligible transfer and transit passengers to experience the country during longer flight connections. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced the Amazing Thailand Transfer Passenger Privilege on 7 October, right after a Letter of Intent was signed at the Ministry of Transport on 5 October.

The framework brings together TAT, the Department of Airports, Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering, the Airlines Association of Thailand, Thai Airways International and Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel. Said six organisations will develop passenger privileges, services and short tourism experiences suited to the time available between flights.

The proposed routes could connect airports with nearby cities, attractions, communities and tourism businesses. TAT said each experience would be planned around passenger convenience, safety, ground transport and a timely return to the airport for the connecting flight. The first stage, for now, will focus on practical privileges and transit experiences for eligible passengers.

The initiative is intended to turn time between flights into additional visitor spending for restaurants, shops, attractions and local operators. It also supports Thailand’s ambition to become an aviation and tourism hub all the while encouraging travellers to see more than just the country’s airport.

The TAT release does not yet specify a launch date, the participating airports or the eligibility rules. For now, the agreement only establishes a framework for development and testing, with the results expected to guide any future expansion.
