Rising fuel costs and geopolitical instability are putting pressure on global aviation

At the IATA AGM 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Thomas Reynaert, Senior Vice President External Affairs at IATA, warns that higher fuel prices will inevitably make flying more expensive and urges governments to avoid adding further costs through taxation and burdensome regulation.

His message is clear: now is the time for governments to create enabling regulatory frameworks that allow airlines to operate more flexibly, keep costs under control, and continue offering passengers affordable travel and strong connectivity.
